Gladius is a Latin word for short sword. Early ancient Roman swords were similar to those used by the Greeks. From the 3rd century BC, the Romans adopted swords similar to those used by the Celtiberians and others during the conquest of Hispania.

The proper use of the gladius is to lead with a shield and thrust with the sword. Contrary to popular belief, all types of gladius appear to have also been suitable for cutting and chopping motions as well as for thrusting.

James Horton (Renegade Watcher and Joe Dawson's brother-in-law) was the leader of the Hunters -- a band of mortals dedicated to killing all Immortals. He was born in 1945, and died in 1994 of a stab-wound inflicted by Duncan MacLeod. He had previously survived a pistol attack by Joe Dawson (falling into the Seine afterwards) and serious wounds by MacLeod's sword during the previous years.

Joe Dawson served in Vietnam under Immortal Andrew Cord. In 1968, after seeing Cord shot, Joe accidentally stepped on a landmine, blowing him up. He was saved by the resurrected Cord, who carried him in back and took him to the army medical center. Not being able to cope with the loss of his legs, he tried to commit suicide by shooting himself. Before he was able to do that, he was visited by a Watcher named Ian Bancroft, who told him about immortality.
